Ten Russians is still the latakia heavy blend I reach for but this is a nice step down. This is the Tactical Nuclear Penguin of pipe tobacco - a joke that probably belongs in a Mountain Dew commercial and not in polite company. Most other cuts wouldn't work with this much Latakia. Recommended. The tobacco lights easily and stays lit well too. What I'm getting? Nose is definitely noticeable but not overpowering as some here suggest or like some aromatics. PK dominates the weak tasting 965 but 965 does add quite a bit of oriental and nicotine which makes the combination more interesting than the components. This mixture is now on my favourites list. While I did enjoy this with a good jolt of black rum on the side at a party, I'm not sure it's a daily kind of smoke. I feel like I'm the naysayer here, I read sooo many positive things about this blend. I smoke this after lunch in the office when I want to recharge the brain without too much of a nicotine fry ( nicotine strength is medium). So full flavored but with no hint of bite. It is pretty strong, both in nicotine and aroma. Even though I only like Latakia in very small doses, I dared to pack a small clay bowl full of Pirate Kake. I suppose that there are people out there for whom there can never be too much Latakia or Perique or Basma, or whatever other condiment we can name. The tobacco seems dry enough when being rubbed out but is hard to keep lit without drying. They have the Latakia and Burly playing so well t ogether in this blend. As you progress, the burley makes its presence felt with a note that reminds of baking bread and rounds the harsh edges of the licorice-like (in looks and taste) black weed. It's my humble opinion that C&D has the absolute highest quality widely available Latakia on the market . It has been sitting in my closet for almost exactly 6 years. I'm not talking of an even split, nowhere near, but they do lighten the flavoura smidgen! As far as the room note goes im not sure just yet. I could not cut this with my fairly substantial pocketknife, only whittle on it, just like a hunk of decking. Impressively well-balanced for such a latakia-dominant blend, the burley and orientals add a beautiful woody flavor to the rich smokiness of the latakia. Pirate kake is by far the smokiest, most contemplative Latakia blend out there - it tastes great and is perfect for sitting in the cool night air and taking time off from the world. I usually enjoy it earlier in the day and save the Penzance for later in the day after tea or dinner. However, I didn't find the same results in smaller pipes or even my briars so I might have just had an off day. Wow. The kake is very crumbly, easy to break into chunks or rub out.
